The place looks good and has a rather remarkable setting, with a rooftop and a vast dining room that can feel a little hollow when it lacks a crowd. Overall, our experience was disappointing for the reputation and stature of Mandarin Oriental, whose Chinese restaurant, that we’d expect more of, leans heavily towards Beijing cuisine. The dim sum dishes are decent (shrimp, sea bass, seafood and black truffle), the Peking duck falls short of expectations, and the service generally lacks expertise. One can reasonably assume that this prestigious brand will aim to raise its standards in the coming months.
