Although Al-Balad is Jeddah's most touristy district, the country's very recent opening to tourism means you can still feel a very local and authentic atmosphere, where locals do their shopping and have coffee in the evening. Some streets are home to numerous seafood restaurants, including Ba'eshen. The address follows the usual pattern, where you choose your freshly caught fish and pay by weight, before seeing it served grilled or fried with a bit of salad and a plate of fragrant white and red rice. In Ba'eshen, you can eat in the traditional way, on the floor, in small, convivial majlis.
