The venue, tucked inside the Waldorf Astoria (the entrance is tricky to find, but persevere), is truly impressive. The lift takes you up to the second floor, where you overlook the enormous Murano-style chandelier in the lobby and step into a grandiose dining room designed like a grand music salon. When such a vast space is nearly empty, a gentle melancholy settles in like a slow adagio, which you can even play yourself on the piano tucked in the corner of this big parquet-floored room. Beautiful tableware, silver cutlery, and devoted service, with a slight lack of ease and experience, accompany an obviously ambitious Italian cuisine full of thoughtful touches (a proper amuse-bouche featuring a welcome arancino, tapenade, little breads…). From the Italian-written only menu, the fettuccine with scallops (actually bay scallops) and eggplant purée stand out : well-executed and creamy. The scaloppine al limone are less convincing ; good thickness of veal but slightly overcooked, with a thick sauce that fails to highlight the lemon. The highlight comes at the end : their signature tiramisu served in a glass, which could do without the decorative red berries but delivers the flavour of genuine artisanal craftsmanship. Mocktails, Acqua Panna water, good coffee.
